A wonderful day around Cape Point, Boulders Beach and Chapman's Peak, with an on-time pickup and a skilled driver. I found the commentary nearly nonstop, and lunch was a little pricey.

So many things packed into one day, and the guides explained every stop well. An excellent day out.

We enjoyed the day, but the child seat's strap was broken and the guide could not mend it, so our baby rode on our laps.

A good way to see the south of Cape Town, with every major sight and a pickup on time. I wanted more time at the lighthouse and Boulders, and less at Hout Bay.

Our small group got on easily, and the guide took time at each viewpoint and welcomed questions all the way. We learnt a lot and the views were great.

A roomy minibus, an itinerary that covered the big sights without rushing, and a tasty seafood lunch. I would happily recommend it.
the day in brief
The listing on this site is a 10-hour day in an air-conditioned vehicle with a live guide in English, starting with a hotel pickup in Cape Town and ending with a drop-off at the same kind of address. The record names 13 pickup areas, from Hout Bay and Camps Bay to the city centre and the Waterfront, and asks you to contact the provider if your hotel is not on the list. The price starts from $44.
This Cape Point and Boulders Beach tour runs south down the peninsula, into the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park and out again along False Bay. The record lists stops at Bo-Kaap, Chapman's Peak Drive, the Cape of Good Hope, the new Cape Point lighthouse, the Boulders Penguin Colony, Simon's Town and Muizenberg Beach. That is the whole tip of the peninsula in a single loop, which is why the day is long.
Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before for a full refund, and you can reserve now and pay later. The pages of this guide go deeper than the listing does: what the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point each mean, what the reserve charges, how the funicular works and whether to tour or drive. Read the ones you need, then pick a date on the booking panel.

the place
Cape Point in South Africa lies far down the Cape Peninsula, and Wesgro, the Western Cape's tourism agency, puts it 60 km from Cape Town. The reserve sits in the southern section of Table Mountain National Park, and its operator describes it as part of the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site. It is a landscape of cliffs, fynbos and wind, and it feels a long way from the city even though the distance on the map is modest.
Two names compete for attention there. Cape Point is the headland with the lighthouses, and the Cape of Good Hope is the rocky shore with the signboards, one of 3 promontories in the same reserve. Neither is the southern tip of Africa, which South African Tourism places at Cape Agulhas, about 220 km to the south-east. Our first guide sorts the names out, with a map.
History hangs over the place. Bartolomeu Dias first rounded the peninsula in 1488 and called it the Cape of Storms, and the reserve counts 26 recorded shipwrecks around the point. King John II of Portugal later gave it the more hopeful name that survives. That mix of warning and promise is the mood of the whole day.

the reviews
The listing has 3,399 reviews rated 4.8, with the guide at 4.9, transportation at 4.8 and value for money at 4.8. A sample that large and that close to the top is a good sign about the operator and the guides. It does not tell you which date will have clear weather or which guide you will get. A sample that large and that close to the top is a good sign about the operator and the guides, though not a promise about the date you pick.
The newest English reviews are all five stars, and they praise knowledgeable, welcoming guides, a comfortable minibus and an itinerary that does not feel rushed. They also carry a few honest notes: one guest wanted more time at the lighthouse and Boulders, one found Hout Bay not much to see and one found the commentary almost continuous.
Read those notes as planning advice. If you want long quiet stretches, a small group or private tour may suit you better, and our day-trip page compares them. If you enjoy a guide who talks all day, this is a strong fit. A rating describes the operator, and the page you are reading describes the place. the lighthouse
The old lighthouse dates from 1859 and stands on Da Gama Peak, 238 m above sea level, and it proved very ineffective in mist. A newer one, from 1914, has the strongest beam on the South African coast. The stop on our tour is the new Cape Point lighthouse, for 45 minutes. The views are of the cliffs and the sea, and the weather decides how much of them you get.
On arrival the record describes a choice between buying a ticket for the funicular and taking a 15-minute walk up that passes a viewpoint. The Flying Dutchman funicular takes 3 minutes, leaves every 3 minutes and is wheelchair accessible, and a return ticket is R125 for an adult. The walk costs nothing, and the ride saves your legs.
Our lighthouse page explains the difference between the old and the new tower, the Keeper's Trail behind the upper station and what to do when mist closes in. It is worth reading if the lighthouse is your main reason for the day, because a short stop rewards a plan. the stops
The record gives minutes for most stops, which makes the day easy to picture. Chapman's Peak Drive is 20 minutes, the Cape of Good Hope 30 minutes, the new Cape Point lighthouse 45 minutes, the Boulders Penguin Colony 1 hour, Simon's Town 75 minutes and Muizenberg Beach 25 minutes. Bo-Kaap is 10 minutes, and the two long drives are 30 minutes and 50 minutes.
The description adds Maiden's Cove, with views of Camps Bay, the 12 Apostles range and Lion's Head, and the seals at Hout Bay Harbour. A boat trip out to the seals, listed at 45 minutes, is offered as an option among the highlights, and an optional stop at Hout Bay Boatyard of 50 minutes appears in the itinerary. On the way home the guide stops to show you the shark spotters at Muizenberg.
Our day-trip page goes through the order from pickup to drop-off and compares the other versions that reach Cape Point, from a half day to a private tour. If you care about one stop more than the rest, that page shows where the minutes are, so you can decide whether the day is right for you before you book.

the fees
The reserve's gate fee is separate from the funicular, and it depends on who you are. The operator's page lists standard entry at R595 for an adult and R288 for a child, with cheaper bands for South Africans and SADC nationals. Those rates are valid from 1 Nov 2026 to 31 Oct 2027 and rise on 1 November each year.
Our listing's record has no line about the gate fee, so we cannot say whether it is part of the price. Read the option on the booking page, and plan to cover the gate and the funicular yourself if it does not say. The fee page of this guide sets out every band and the age rules for children, which differ between the gate and the funicular.
All of that is in rand, as the operator writes it, and we do not convert it. The tour price on this site is a separate figure in dollars, a from price that changes with the date and the group. Budget for both, and add lunch, which is a stop of its own in Simon's Town. Budget for both, and add lunch, which is a stop of its own in Simon's Town, so that the day holds no surprises at the till.

tour or drive
A tour handles the pickup, the driving and the timing, so you can watch the coast instead of the road. A hired car hands you the schedule and the keys. South African Tourism says South Africans drive on the left, that seatbelts are compulsory and that it is best to hire vehicles in advance, especially from December to February.
Inside the reserve the limit is 60 km/h, and the operator says the direct drive from the gate up to Cape Point takes between 10 and 15 minutes. The operator also gives an Atlantic route through Hout Bay and Chapman's Peak Drive, and a False Bay route along the M3 and through Simon's Town. The operator also gives an Atlantic route through Hout Bay and Chapman's Peak Drive, and a False Bay route along the M3 and through Simon's Town, so a driver can take one side out and the other back.
Taxis, the Cape Point Explorer Bus and a small-group or private tour are other ways to reach the Cape. Our tour-or-self-drive page compares them and includes a short quiz that points you to a way and, where it fits, a listing, so you can decide in a few taps and keep the planning light, whichever way the answer falls.

the season
The Cape is open all year, but the day feels different by month. The gate opens at 6:00am and closes at 6:00pm from October to March, and from April to September it is 7:00am to 5:00pm, with the funicular running a little less than the gate. Late exits are fined, so the closing time matters more than it looks.
The weather is the other half. The operator's winter guide describes the lighthouse and nearby rocks frequently vanishing behind the mist, so a winter day can be moody and photogenic rather than clear. South African Tourism says the fynbos blooms fully in spring, from September to November, just after the winter rains.
The month-by-month chart below comes from a weather station at Cape Town International airport, which is inland, so it tells you about the city's climate and not the wind at the Cape. Treat it as a guide to temperature and rain only, and leave room in your plan for the exposed headland to feel cooler and windier than the chart suggests.

the penguins
The tour spends 1 hour at the Boulders Penguin Colony, then 75 minutes in Simon's Town for lunch and a walk. That is the gentlest part of the day, after the wind of the headland, and it is a good place to eat, stretch your legs and warm up before the last stop at Muizenberg Beach, where the day winds down.
One guest on the tour found the seaside lunch a bit expensive, so take a little cash or a card, or bring a snack. The record lists lunch as a stop but gives no meal price, so treat it as extra. Our page on the Boulders stop explains what the colony visit gives you and what it does not, and how it fits the day. Penguins are a stop on this day and not its subject, so the colony visit is a short, gentle pause between two longer drives.
Penguins are a stop on this day and not its subject. If they are what you really want, the Boulders Beach pages on our sister guide cover the colony in depth, and this site stays with the Cape and the road to it. If penguins are what you really want, a dedicated penguin guide will cover the colony in more depth, and this site stays with the Cape and the road to it.

Time at the Cape now: --:--
who it suits
This is a long day in a vehicle with a lot of ground to cover, so it suits travellers who like a full itinerary and a guide who explains things. It is a sensible choice if you do not want to drive on the left, if you are staying in one of the 13 listed pickup areas or if you want the whole peninsula in one go.
It suits fewer people who want long walks. The stops are timed in minutes, and a guest who wanted more time at the lighthouse and Boulders said so in a review. If you want to walk the Cape of Good Hope boardwalk, about 3.5 km and 2 to 3 hours return, plan a separate visit or choose a private tour. The funicular or the walk up is your choice on arrival, which keeps the effort in your hands.
Check the vehicle when you book if you travel with a young child, since one guest reported a faulty child seat belt on their day. The record also does not give a group size, so check the booking page for the date you want, and bring layers, sunscreen and a windproof jacket for an exposed headland. Do that before you book, and mention any mobility needs and the size of your party at the same time, so the day suits everyone in it, from the youngest to the oldest.
